To echo the sighs of many students right now, “Summer…is basically over.” And while school is starting up again soon, the seasons are changing too. Which brings up the dilemma about what to wear as the weather cools off. The answer: transitional pieces. It’s all about planning your outfits and making the right investments for later. Audrey, from Audrey Salutes, tells us more:
The summer seems to be flying by. Can you believe August is knocking on the door? Whenever August rolls around and all the back to school items are waiting to be purchased it gets me thinking about fall. It’s fun to see all the “new” fall clothing gracing the window displays in various stores too. After months of begging for warm weather some of us are now looking forward to cool fall nights. I start getting the itch for fall weather about mid-August!
However, a question I always ask myself towards the end of the summer is, ” what type of transitional pieces do I need for fall?” The good news is that many of these transitional pieces might already be in our closets from Spring. That’s the beauty of Midwest living, we can get a lot of use out of our Spring and Fall attire. If you’re in that summer clothing slump and are in the market for a few summer to fall transitional pieces, take a look at these “practical” Spendy and Thrifty finds below. Enjoy!
Transitional Summer to Fall Pieces
SPENDY // THRIFTY
Light Cardigan— Great piece to throw over tanks or t-shirts in late August into September. Wear with dresses, jeans and perfect for the office too. I have a teacher friend who says she’s always cold in her classroom so this is a practical and stylish option for her. Can be dressed up or down!

Rain Boots- These are a fabulous investment. I know they can’t be worn right now, but it’s fun to plan ahead! You can wear rain boots in the Spring and all through the fall when the weather doesn’t quite call for heavy boots. I wear mine in early winter too. Wear these with stylish boot socks or throw over leggings for a cute, trendy, casual style!

Graphic Tees- I talk about graphic tees a lot on this blog but for good reason. Graphic tees can be worn year round but are especially practical during the transition from summer to fall. Tanks tops can start taking a backseat to t-shirt style graphic tees. Wear graphic tees with a pair of flared style jeans and booties or with skinny jeans and a favorite sweater for cooler days. Cute tucked into a pair of shorts with sneakers too. There is an abundant amount of graphics to choose from and I’ve seen many fun, fall prints!

Flared Style Jeans- The 70’s style look is going to be “in” for fall. Flared style jeans have slowly been making a comeback. Wearing the flared style is a great way to elongate your legs and by adding a pair of heels you will be all set for the fall 70’s trend. High waist flares are fabulous but if you’re not into the high waist option there are many others to choose from. My advice is to find a medium wash denim so you can really dress your jeans up for casual Friday or more business casual meetings. Great for date nights too!
NORDSTROM // TARGET
Denim Shirtdress- A shirtdress could be one of the best transitional pieces in your wardrobe. You can wear it right now with a belt and some gladiator sandals, wear it this fall with capri or full length leggings and flats or booties. Another option is to wear it this winter with leggings and high boots. Also, a shirtdress can serve as a light coat too. Fabulous investments piece! The GAP always carries wonderful shirtdress options.
