Reflections On Maya Angelou

Reflections On Maya Angelou

By Christine Horansky

When I was 14, I used to listen to Maya Angelou’s “On the Pulse of the Morning” on repeat. I loved her voice and the courage and beauty she imbued into her words and her inflections. Later, I read her story of how she learned not just to pour her worldview onto the page, but to speak those lyrics so that her voice and the voice of others might be heard. Dr. Angelou encouraged all women to be vocal witnesses of their lives. She reminds us all to be that light in the face of fear, oppression and our own darknesses.
