It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Until you’re on your third straight day of uninterrupted family time. Don’t get me wrong, I love getting to spend quality time with my family during the holiday season. But sometimes, it all gets to be a bit too much and you need a second to yourself to relax and rejuvenate. So consider this your L&P self-help guide to detoxifying from the oversaturation of holiday family time.
Take a short walk
Sometimes, completely escaping your family isn’t an option. So if you need a few minutes to yourself, head outside for a brisk walk. Getting your blood pumping will help boost your mood, and the cold winter air will refresh you and destress you.
Meditate
It may sound silly if it’s not already in your daily routine, but meditation can make a huge difference. Find a comfortable spot, take some deep breaths, and visualize a peaceful scene. Before you know it, you’ll be relaxed and ready to take on more family socializing.
Take a hot bath
No one can bother you in the bath, it’s like a universal rule. So steam up your bathroom, light a candle or throw in some bath scents and let the hot water melt away the stress and anxiety that comes with the lack of alone time.
Hit the gym
Not only is the gym a chat-free zone, it’s a place to air out your frustration through some hardcore sweating. Whether you run it out, or hit the weights, you’re sure to release some of that pent-up tension.
FaceTime a friend
Sometimes all you need is a quick chat with a friend to relieve some family-formed stress. Whether you laugh over an inside joke, or rant about the annoying things your family has done, talking to someone other than a family member can really make a difference.
No matter how you choose to let off steam during the family-packed holiday season, take a moment to consider what you have to be grateful for. Thinking about the things you’re thankful for can really put things into perspective, and the holidays are a great time to remember how much you have going for you. Because in the end, even when they’re annoying you the most, your family is still one of your greatest gifts.
