Get ready for a storm to put a damper on your festive Valentine’s Day plans. An “atmospheric river” is about to roll over the Bay Area, which means we can expect a lot of rain and flooding throughout San Francisco. But fear not, there’s still plenty you can do during this weekend of love in the best place for the romantic holiday—besides having a nice dinner at a restaurant. Here are some activities you can do indoors, whether it’s in the comforts of your home or in one of the many awesome places of interest in the city. Make sure you stay out of the rain while celebrating the holiday with your partner, girl squad, or friends!
Museums galore
If you don’t want to shop, then definitely try visiting one of the many museums in the city. Besides reveling in the fascinating displays and exhibits, there are a few museums that are holding special events for Valentine’s Day! At the Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, you can create Valentine’s Day cards for the African penguins at the museum, which will then be used as nesting material for their mating season. Or buy a ticket to the Exploratorium After Dark on Embarcadero for an evening dedicated to chocolate and the process of how it’s made.
The best place to stroll and shop
If you’re in the mood to stroll but you don’t want to be hop over puddles, the Ferry Building is the place for you. Although the building itself isn’t very big, it’s filled with a variety of shops to explore and eateries to try. You can easily spend about two hours in this beautiful building without getting soaked.
The show goes on
Although the storm is probably going to rain on the Nude Valentine’s Parade and the Valentine’s Day Pillow Fight, there are plenty of other hilarious events to attend that are inside! There are numerous comedy shows being held that will supply tales of love and heartbreak in return for laughs. We recommend checking out FunCheapSF for a list of all the comedy shows happening during the next few days. OR if you want to try to get out of the city and see a show that’s as powerful as it is relatable, the groundbreaking Vagina Monologues will be performed in Oakland for free.
Baby, it’s just too cold and wet outside
Let’s face it: this is the perfect weather to stay inside, wear your fuzziest of socks, and wrap yourself in a blanket. We certainly have a few ideas about what you could do inside for Valentine’s Day if you don’t want to bother going outside at all. “A way to a person’s heart is through their stomach” holds true in our opinion. Cooking and baking love-themed desserts are excellent ways to bond and have fun with one another. If you’re not in the mood to cook, try having your own inexpensive wine, cheese, and chocolate tasting at home! All that requires is a quick visit to the grocery store and picking up a few of the classic Valentine’s Day fare. There are also plenty of movies, television shows, and documentaries to stream. We suggest having a marathon of your favorite romantic comedies or checking out Netflix’s stand-up shows of Iliza Shlesinger’s Elder Millennial, The Honeymoon Standup Special, and Jen Kirkman’s I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine).
No matter what you’re doing for Valentine’s Day and the weekend after, we hope you enjoy it with your loved ones. Have fun!
