The favorite Yule-tide song, “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” should serve as a great reminder to all to be on our best behavior 365 days of the year. Many celebrities, politicians and athletes have decided to challenge Santa’s list-making ability though and act out during 2013. These celebrities have made sexist, degrading and discriminatory comments against women and have earned top spots on Santa’s “Naughty List” this year. Santa has seen these sexists while they were interviewed, while they were singing and while they were writing.
Therefore, I made this list and checked it twice and I decided who’s naughty, not nice.
Robin Thicke
Thicke’s catchy “Blurred Lines” song may have been a radio favorite, but it definitely did not have the same sentiment with many women. The objectifying language throughout the pop song included lyrics such as: “he was close, tried to domesticate you, but you’re an animal, baby, it’s in your nature” and “I’m going to take a good girl, I know you want it.” His underlying references to sexually taking advantage of women and referencing women as “animals” is anything but nice. The music video is even more disgusting, displaying half-naked women dancing and posing. Even one girl in the video has a mini stop sign perched on her body. Thicke definitely deserves a top spot on the naughty list.
Erick Erickson
The politically conservative blogger and editor-in-chief of RedState.com has ranted about a topic he thinks he’s an expert about–women. In an interview, Erickson said, “the roles of a male and a female in society and in other animals, the male typically is the dominant role. The female, it’s not antithesis, or it’s not competing, it’s a complementary role.” That, among other comments he has made clearly show how misogynist and discriminatory he is towards women. Having the mindset that men should dominate women and citing this as fact, gives the wrong impression to the public. This year, his stocking should be stuffed with coal to teach him a valuable lesson.
Miley Cyrus
Between her twerking, drug references, nudity and lashing out Cyrus has littered news feeds and outlets for months now. This act she is pulling is not setting a great example for all the teens and young adults who grew up watching her popular show, “Hannah Montana” on the Disney Channel or her various movies. Women need more positive role models to look up to and Cyrus is currently serving as an example as what not to do and who not to be. Hopefully, Cyrus can clean up her act and in the future switch from Santa’s “Naughty List” to “Nice List”.
Rush Limbaugh
Conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh would probably be the longest reigning member on Santa’s “Naughty List” since he has been known for saying countless…let’s just say interesting things. This year alone, he has continuously called women “sluts” and “abortion machines.” Any person who thinks it is socially, morally or politically correct to call women names such as those, deserves to get absolutely nothing for Christmas but a cold, hard lump of coal that is akin to his heart and brain.
Duncan Keith
Chicago Blackhawks hockey team Defensemen Duncan Keith seemed to have skated into Santa’s “Naughty List” this Christmas. In early April this year, during a post-game interview, female reporter Karen Thomson asked Keith about a slash that he made during the game. Thomson said that it looked like a plenty and this is the conversation that followed:
Keith: “Oh no, I don’t think there was. I think he scored a nice goal. The ref was right there. That’s what the ref saw. We should get you as ref, maybe, hey?”
Thomson: “Yeah, maybe. I can’t skate, though.”
Keith: “First female referee… can’t play probably, either, right? But you’re thinking the game like you know it? Okay, see ya.”
Keith’s response is rude and sexist to not only Thomson, but to all female reporters, referees and athletes. His insinuation that females have little knowledge about sports and little athletic ability compared to men is incredibly insulting.
So, next year, they better watch out, they better not cry, and they better not pout. Maybe next year they will be good to women for goodness sake.
