Right now, the 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival is being held from May 13th to May 24th and all aspects of the cinema industry are in the spotlight. During the festival, important issues in the movie business are being addressed, thanks to the partnership between The Hollywood Reporter and Kering. They’ve joined together to host a series of talks, taking place over the course of the festival, called “Women in Motion.” Prominent and up-and-coming figures in the industry, from actresses to producers to directors, come together to talk about the problem with Hollywood when it comes to the treatment of women. Women like Salma Hayek, Isabella Rossellini, Christine Vachon, Elizabeth Karlsen, Liang Ying, and more spoke about the sexist expectation Hollywood has of women: that women can’t be leads in a movie, that women can only tell certain stories, that women become less relevant when they age or have kids, that women simply do not have the same privileges as their male counterparts. They all speak of change in the current landscape, but they also encourage change that will cultivate the younger generations going into cinema. If we want women to have more presence, to be taken as seriously as men in different roles within the movie business, and to tell the stories they want to tell without stigma or superficial notions, then it’s most important to foster that vision of equal freedom in the young and aspiring.
