Lady Gaga performed her emotional Oscar-nominated song “Til It Happens To You” at the 88th Academy Awards with Joe Biden, Vice President of the United States, introducing her. The awards show took place on Sunday amid a lot of criticism and anticipation. For the second year in a row, the Oscars and Hollywood were criticized for not giving equal opportunities in film to people of color compared to their white counterparts. And it’s not simply that all the best actors, actresses, and supporting roles nominated were white, but also that the stories being recognized focused on experiences and stories of white people. With racial issues still hanging in the air, Lady Gaga and Joe Biden took the stage to highlight an issue that definitely needs change: rape culture.
Lady Gaga’s song was featured in CNN’s documentary “The Hunting Ground” that delved into the on-campus sexual assault trend that still occurs today. Biden has been advocating for sexual assault victims since his official Violence Against Women Act in 1990 and continues his work as vice president. Before introducing Lady Gaga’s performance, Biden reiterated the emphasis on changing campus rape culture and recognizing the situations of non-consensual sex. “Let’s change the culture so that no abused woman or man feels they have to ask themselves, ‘what did I do?'” Biden pleaded to the audience, “They did nothing wrong.” He refers viewers and attendants to go to ItsOnUs.org and take the pledge to stop potential sexual assault. Because, in the end, Hollywood is not separate from our society. It’s on Hollywood too.
